Obituary for Dorothy W Lewerenz

Dorothy Wilma Lewerenz, of Toms River, New Jersey, passed away peacefully on Friday, December 9, 2016. She was 83.
Dorothy was born on February10, 1933 in Boston, Massachusetts to Captain Ernest August Max Lewerenz and Hazel Sylvester Park Lewerenz. Dorothy was raised in Boston and Rutherford, NJ.
An excellent student, Dorothy earned an associate’s degree from Green Mountain College in Vermont and a bachelor’s degree in nursing from Columbia University in New York City. After graduating from Columbia, Dorothy completed nursing training at Columbia-Presbyterian Hospital until she began working with Dr. David M.C. Ju, an internationally renowned plastic surgeon and researcher on melanoma. She was Dr. Ju’s longstanding surgical nurse and worked with him until his passing in 1996, at which time she retired.
Dorothy was a devoted daughter, sister, aunt, and great aunt. She was closely involved in the lives of her four nephews and nieces and loved taking them on trips (both domestic and international) and to her shore house in Beach Haven West, NJ. She also greatly assisted her nephew Richard and niece-in-law Liesbeth by helping care for their firstborn, Nicholas. Dorothy took immense pleasure in exposing Nicholas to Manhattan by stroller, with the Central Park Zoo being a favorite destination for them.
Dorothy had a lifelong love of horses, dogs, and travel. She began riding at Green Mountain and continued until her early 70s; she particularly loved the time she spent with the horses she owned (Sam, Charlie, and Skyjet). Dorothy also had several dogs during her life, including JoDo (who she shared with her younger sister, Joan—hence the name), Jimmy of Ballantyre (who she showed with great success in the 1960s), Pumpernickel, and Aspen. Dorothy traveled to six of the seven continents, with a favorite trip taking place in 1958 on board an American Export Lines ship commanded by her father, Captain E.A.M. Lewerenz, that included passage through the Panama Canal and ports of call in Bombay, Hong Kong, and Cape Town. Other fondly remembered trips were camera safaris in Kenya and South Africa and traveling to Germany for the Oberammergau Passion Play.
Surviving Dorothy are her nephews and nieces: Richard and his wife, Liesbeth, of Irvington-on-Hudson, New York; Nancy of Farmington, Missouri; Thomas and his wife, Amy, of Olney, Maryland; and Julie and her husband, James, of Charles Town, West Virginia. Dorothy is also survived by eight grandnieces and grandnephews (Alexandra, Danielle, Nicholas, Annelies, Eric, William, Maisy, and Heather).
There will be a visitation from 10:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 21, 2016 at Calhoun - Mania Funeral Home, 19 Lincoln Avenue, Rutherford, NJ, followed immediately by a funeral service with Reverend Peter Wilkinson officiating. Burial will occur thereafter at Hillside Cemetery, 742 Rutherford Avenue, Lyndhurst, NJ.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to honor Dorothy’s love of veterans and animals may be made to Puppies Behind Bars, 263 W. 38th Street, New York, NY 10018 (www.puppiesbehindbars.com/home).
